A Tokyo-bound American Airlines jet with 197 passengers on board made an emergency landing on an island in Alaska’s Aleutians after a fire warning light went off, the airline said Monday.
Flight 175, en route from Dallas-Fort Worth to Tokyo, landed safely without fire at Eareckson Air Station on Shemya Island shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday, according to company spokesman Tim Smith.
Smith says the 197 passengers were evacuated while the cargo was removed.
The jet later flew to Anchorage instead of heading for Tokyo, and passengers were placed in hotels.
American Airlines plans an internal investigation and has notified the Federal Aviation Administration
